THE UQ LAKES CRYSTAL

“The UQ Lakes Crystal” is an innovative General Purpose Building design proposal for The University of Queensland (UQ). This was the final design submission for the Bachelors of Architectural Design.

The design is a permeable channel that does not hinder major viewpoints. The creation of place does not interfere with the pleasing view over the UQ lakes. This is achieved by cutting viewpoint spaces throughout the building. Furthermore, the building should appear as a “rock in the landscape”. This is achieved through materials used and design without steering away or extruding from the rock formation. Following this crystal design concept, the exterior is composed of heavier sandstone coloured materials whilst for the interior cut through area, lighter materials were used to mimic the crystal interior.
