Mugincoble is envisioned to be a purpose-built building for QUT’s School of Architecture and Built Environment and the Aerovate Research Centre. It embodies the spirit of collegiality, exploration, freedom to learn, and community engagement. The focus areas of pedagogy, space, radical inclusivity, and health and well-being are exemplified to create an innovative learning experience. The big ideas of “Urban Gorge” and “Meeting Place” drive the overall design. The name Mugincoble pays homage to an ancient indigenous meeting place and the importance of storytelling. The built form opens a central courtyard, and the inward-facing balconies create an outdoor amphitheatre. This meeting place provides a dedicated space for traditions, where storytelling events or performances can occur. The Urban Gorge idea is to juxtapose the built form and bring the Botanical Gardens into the site. It makes this steep-walled canyon with greenery and light piercing through the lower apertures. Curved terraces imitate the rocks and indentations of a gorge. These terraces are filled with planting and green spaces to create a clean-air learning environment.
